Xiomeran Journalists to Be Protected Via Asylum Laws and "Exceptional Migration Status" - Judge

Updated: Jul 31, 2019

Cairo Gough, the Special Attorney for Counsel of Ethics Investigations and the Chief Foreign Nationals Judge for the Zamastanian Judicial System, declared on Tuesday night that the four Xiomeran journalists who have been hiding in Zamastan for the past several months are to be granted an "honorary protectorate status under the Imperial Republic of Zamastan's asylum laws and the Exceptional Migration Status Bill of 2004... due to their actions in acting for diplomatic and democratic strides within our borders."

Gough, made a famous public figure during his counsel of the Delavian Bribery Scandal which led to President Zacharias Castovia's resignation in January 2019, made a public statement after weeks of silence on the topic. The four journalists, known by their first names only, were the subjects of extradition requests by the Xiomeran government on July 17th. The Xiomeran government also sent extradition requests to journalists in Laeral and Lauchenoiria, and all extraditions were refused by each nation's judiciaries.

Itonan, who is the leader of the HNN "cell" in Zamastan, and his counterparts Citlachel (male), Itzli (male) and Itzli (female), have been operating a significant portion of the XUN, now HNN news sites, which are running as underground resistance information hubs in the Empire of Xiomera. They have been notorious for hacking into public broadcasts to relay their message to Xiomeran citizens, and have in turned been labeled anarchists and rebels by the government there. The journalists have said that if they returned to Xiomera, they could face violence and direct persecution from the government, which Judge Gough was sure to mention in his statement.

"We at the State Department understand that these young people face a tough road ahead should they return to Xiomera," Gough said, "and we do not have the moral compass to leave them to a disastrous fate. That's not what we do."

The journalists displayed damming evidence that showed the expanse of censorship the Xiomeran government undertakes in its propaganda, and some of their broadcasts have also shed light on human rights abuses by the regime.

"They have denounced their citizenship in Xiomera, and in turn, they decided that Zamastan was the right place to go. We welcome them, as we do with any person facing persecution around the world."

It is yet to be seen what the response from the Xiomeran government will be. President Bishop has not commented on the issue, and the Secretary of Trade has not put additional sanctions on the Empire since the revelation of the extradition requests was made.
