TANKER HIT BY ROCKET IN PROVIDENCE WATERWAY. Zamastan Blames Gladysynthia, Who Denies Attack

The IDU Security Council warned that the IDU cannot afford "a major confrontation in the Catican Corridor" as international concern grew over suspected attacks on commercial ships near the coast of Danaska, Gladysynthia.

President Anya Bishop of Zamastan denounced Thursday's incidents at a Security Council meeting, saying: "I strongly condemn any attack against civilian incidents. Facts must be established and responsibilities clarified."

The reported attacks in the Bay of Danaska, off the coast of Gladysynthia left one ship ablaze, forcing scores of crews to abandon the ships. They were the second in a month near the strategic Providence Waterway, a major waterway for Northwest Catican oil supplies.

And though details of what happened were still scarce, the incidents came amid heightened frictions between Zamastan and Gladysynthia.

Secretary of State Avi Tremblan accused Gladysynthia of being behind the reported attacks, hours after Mönusÿnthys called the incidents suspicious.

Speaking at a press briefing in Tofino, Tremblan said Zamastan held Gladysynthia "responsible".

"This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Gladysynthian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication," Pompeo said.

He did not provide hard evidence to back up the Zamastanian stance.

Earlier in the day, Gladysynthia’s Foreign Minister said the timing of the incidents was "suspicious" since they coincided with a meeting between the country's supreme leader and Cadair's Mab Darogan Waywffon Morgan, who was in Mönusÿnthys on an unprecedented visit to defuse the tensions.

"Suspicious doesn't begin to describe what likely transpired this morning," said the Minister, without elaborating further.

'Extreme caution'

Thursday's events have also prompted concern from maritime agencies.

"The shipping industry views this as an escalation of the situation and we are just about as close to a conflict without there being an actual armed conflict, so the tensions are very high," said Ural Tyruia, the head of Zamastanian maritime security for the shipping association ZMaSeO, which represents some 60 percent of the world's merchant fleet, including owners of the two damaged tankers.

Cadair’s foreign ministry said it "is concerned about the situation in Providence Waterway" and that "this type of incident further increases tension in the region". The Cadair Maritime Authority meanwhile advised ships "to keep a good distance to Gladysynthian waters" in light of Thursday's events.

The Shuell Maritime Trade Operations, which is run by the Shuell navy, also put out an alert early on Thursday urging "extreme caution".

Following the suspected attacks, the benchmark Vurviau crude spiked at one point by as much four percent to over $62 a barrel.

A sixth of all oil traded by sea, which amounts to 12 percent of oil traded worldwide, passes through the Providence Waterway, making it one of the world's most important sea lanes.
