Parents on Aeluria arrested over illegal homeschooling

From the Lauchenoirian Guardian: https://theidu.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1940

A couple have been arrested on the island of Aeluria for illegally home-schooling their three children for ‘religious reasons’. The children, aged 5, 7 and 11 had never been enrolled in school. The situation came to the attention of the authorities after the 11-year-old girl attempted to run away from home and was found alone in the woods by a farmer.

Home-schooling is legal in Lauchenoiria only with a permit. Religion is not an accepted reason for a permit to be granted. Permits are generally only granted if: the child lives over two hours travel time from the nearest school, the child has a disability which makes attending school difficult or detrimental to their health, or the child has had proven adverse experiences in school which would make it damaging for them to continue to attend.

The couple, who cannot be named for legal reasons, lived in a rural property with no immediate neighbours. It is reported that the children were forbidden from leaving the property unaccompanied, and that they were not allowed to socialise with other children outside of the religious services. They attended a Lurite congregation in a village 20km from their home, where they supposedly used false names.

The Confederation of Village Lurites, CVL, issued a statement condemning the couple, saying: “community is a big part of Lurian, and this family locking their children away is not in keeping with the Lurian religion. We unequivocally condemn any unlawful activity carried out in the name of religion, and regardless of disagreements on educational policy with the central government, behaving in this manner is unacceptable.”

There were no signs that physical violence was used on the children, however the 11-year-old reported that she ran because her parents refused to allow a doctor to examine her brother, who was sick at the time. The three children have now been placed with a foster family on the island, and enrolled in a local school.
