In a night full of big gains and big losses, perhaps the most notable was that of the communist party. Once the leadership and majority in a highly controversial nation, the communists lost 22 seats and were moved from their original standing of second in the polls to fourth by the end of the night. Their presidential candidate also finished in fifth place, marking a certain difficulty in any attempt to regain significant power in the coming second round. The liberal party also took a significant fall of 11, but held onto the dominant lead with 31 total seats.
In terms of victories, the conservatives mustered an additional 11 seats and took a second place standing, a result that Zamastanian electoral experts had not expected in light of domestic conservative policies plaguing the current Zamastanian political spectrum. The Lauchenoirian Conservative Presidential candidate, Alberto Causer, finished in first. Lauchenoirian Democratic Alliance candidate Alex Marwick finished second, which set the stage for the duo to face off in the June 30th election.
If the liberals plan to form any government in the coming weeks, they will likely have to merge with additional political parties. The Conservative Party displayed a willingness to merge with the liberals, which is bound to benefit their standing due to the potential bi-partisanship on the table.
The fear of Kerlian interference and ties greatly hindered the progress of both the Social Democratic Party and the Feminist Party. Both parties lost all of their seats (2 and 6 respectively), and their presidential candidates both were at the end of the polls, with their votes coming in at less than 1% each.
The Left Alliance, winning 12 seats, were undeniable winners. Previous to this election, they had a total of zero seats. Their strategy aimed to attract Communist voters who wanted to separate themselves from the chaos of their party during the election season. The increase in Left Alliance votes, however, does not show the overall growth in popularity of capitalism in Lauchenoiria.
The Aelurian Independence Party (AIP) lost half of its seats, while the pro-independence and pro-Spanish language Partido Anarquista de Yervia (Anarchist Party of Yervia, PAY) gained seats for representation in parliament. Possibly as a result of their failed bid at independence in March, the AIP dropped to two seats. In the meantime, the Anarchist Party of Yervia gained their first seats.
In perhaps the most shocking twist of the night, Liberal Party candidate Nina Pond only very narrowly lost a dictatorial placing in the second round to Alex Marwick. Her loss coincided with a dramatic drop in liberal seats. Marwick is a popular figure in Lauchenoiria, and his name recognition during the civil war likely was more attributable than Pond's. With the two candidates sharing similar ideologically, many voters supported Marwick in place of Pond.
The second round of the election will see Alberto Causer face off against Alex Marwick, and will take place on the 30th June.
