FOLEY SAKZI ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL BID, SPLITTING THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY

In a stunning political move that shook the foundations of Congressional Hall, the rest of Tofino, and possibly the entirety of the Presidential election cycle, Foley Sakzi announced his candidacy. The current Speaker of the Chamber is one of the most widely respected politicians in Zamastan and in the International Democratic Union, known for his bipartisan work and his charismatic intrigue. He is also a member of the Blue Conservative Party, which notably shares the membership of President Anya Bishop, who is seeking reelection. The Speaker has famously shut down a number of Bishop’s sponsored bills, sided with liberal members of Congress, and boycotted many senior conservative motions. This notoriety appeals to liberal leaning voters, while still maintaining his conservative values on economic and immigration aspects.

Sakzi has served as the Speaker of the Congress since 2012, and has been serving as a Northern Isle senator since 2008. Before his tenure in politics, he was a corporal in the Zamastanian Armed Forces, seeing action during the Second War in Vulkaria. He was shot in the chest by enemy combatants during the Battle of Amstelveen and critically injured, but recovered and rewarded several medals honoring his bravery and sacrifice during the fighting.

Despite his appeal, Sakzi’s announcement creates a tear in the Conservative base. The conservative party has, until this moment, been banking on President Bishop being their incumbent. Sakzi and Bishop’s rivalry, which became noticeable early on in her administration, is bound to intensify, as President Bishop faces some of the lowest approval ratings of any modern Zamastanian president. Sakzi also faces a growing number of liberal party candidates, including former Speaker Cain Blackwater and Senator Euan Gunn.

The impact of his candidacy announcement was seen quickly on social media, with many conservative politicians endorsing Sakzi within the first several hours, and news stations quickly painting him as the “Savior of the Conservative Party”. Sakzi is bound to realize his appeal to both sides of the political spectrum, and this will likely direct his strategy for navigating the voters in the next year and three months before election day.
