Fifth Runway Opens at Tofino International Airport

The new runway is part of the Government’s Z$116 billion Project Zamastan 2040 plan to modernize the infrastructure of Zamastan, and will create more than 31,000 jobs.

The new runway is needed to allow for expansion to underpin Zamastan's long-term economic growth. Tofino International Airport’s existing 4 runways are effectively full at peak times every day following a 45 per cent increase in passenger numbers since 2014.

The delivery of Southeast Runway is a key recommendation of the Government’s National Aviation Policy, as it will significantly expand connectivity at Tofino International Airport and also enable it to continue to grow as a gateway between Catica and Hespia.

Tofino International Airport is one of the busiest commercial airports in the IDU, and receives over 3,500 flights per day and over 460,000 passengers.

The new 3.1km runway is located almost 1.7km south east of Tofino International Airport’s current main runway. Construction took about two years and a nine-month period of commissioning also occurred. Southeast Runway will support the creation of 31,200 new jobs and Z$2.2 billion in additional economic activity by 2043.

Secretary of Transportation Madeline Essy said: “Tofino International Airport is our main gateway to the world and is crucial for tourism, business and trade. This new runway is part of the Government’s Z$116 billion Project Zamastan 2040 plan to modernize our infrastructure, remove bottlenecks and enable future growth. Connectivity is one of the principles behind the project, further linking Zamastan to the world and all parts of Zamastan to each other."

Other projects to add terminals and airplane hangers to T.I.A. are already underway as construction on an additional 42 gates is expected to be completed by mid-2020. Restaurants and even an indoor golf course are part of the new additions to the complex.
