President Anya Bishop responded to the Xiomeran Government today in her first statement regarding the Xiomeran journalists in Zamastan. “The Imperial Republic officially denounces the censorship of media outlets and free speech carried out by the Empire of Xiomera,” Bishop said in a Wednesday press pool. “We stand against the Emperor’s efforts to undermine democracy and the truth, which we here in Zamastan will continue to and always have supported unconditionally.”
Bishop also announced a new round of sanctions on the Empire, including tariffs on luxury goods and vehicles. She also temporarily suspended the export of Zamastanian-made beverages and non-perishable food products, stating that “dramatic actions need to be taken by the Xiomeran government to ensure a lift in the censorship of the media. Once that’s done, we can start our trade back up again.”
Justice Cuicanan of Xiomera, the administrative member who issued extradition requests for the four journalists, said during a press conference that he found “the paternalistic and condescending attitude of these nations about what laws other nations should enforce to be quite insulting…” He continued on to criticize the lack of censorship in nations, presumably referring to Laeral and Lauchenoiria as well. “Every nation that is sane exercises control over what gets distributed in media. You wouldn't let someone post videos showing children how to jump off cliffs, for example. Maybe they do allow that sort of thing in Zamastan, they certainly seem feckless enough with this nonsense.
Justice Cuicanan was sure to mention the threat of trade sanctions, saying “I thought it was cute that their news outlets said they 'haven't sanctioned us yet' for having the nerve to enforce our own laws like free people. We should be the ones sanctioning them, or at least boycotting their trade, for such blatantly unfriendly acts!"
The President finally broke her silence streak, which was noted by some of her 2020 opponents, specifically Speaker of the Chamber Foley Sakzi, who said “It took the President this long to acknowledge the bravery and stigmatism of these men and women, who are here for the simple fact that they love freedom. For us, this should not be a matter of timing. This should be a matter of standing up when the situation arises. President Bishop cares about her sound bites, she cares very little, I believe, for the democratic process and the liberty for those who suffer around the IDU.”
