Ambassador to the IDU Security Counsel, Zamastanian Joseph Marta, on Wednesday called for a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the escalating conflict in Vulkaria after the body failed to agree on a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire.
Earlier this month, the self-styled Vulkarian National Army (VNA), under the leadership of General Kolman Bacckar, made a push to take Amstelveen. The offensive came days before IDU-backed peace talks, resulting in them being postponed.
The two-week battle has resulted in the deaths of 189 people, the Zamastanian Intelligence Service(Z.I.S) reported on Wednesday. Additionally, more than 25,000 people have been displaced from the conflict zone, the ZIS said.
The Security Council, which Zamastan is a member of this month as part of a tri-presidency, is expected to conduct a closed-door session on Thursday to discuss how to act as the conflict in Vulkaria continues.
The resolution — drafted by Zamastan, a permanent council member — called on all sides in the Vulkaria conflict "immediately to recommit" to peace efforts. It also urges all council member states "to use their influence over the parties" to ensure the that the resolution is implemented.
During negotiations of the draft, Sanctaria had been keen not to characterize the VNA as the the force attacking Amstelveen, diplomats told DPA. Sanctaria, as well as Malabra, has more or less converted to support Bacckar, who has the backing of Gladysynthia. The insurgency in Vulkaria has been ongoing since the 1970s, culminated in three major wars, and has escalated periodically. 2017 was the deadliest year of fighting since the turn of the decade, with 2019 already on track to overtake its preceding year with over 800 killed. The Vulkarian Government is battling several rebel groups, the two most prominent being the VNA and the Malvarian Liberation Front (M.L.F.), which is designated as a terror group by Zamastan, United New England, and Laeral.
